Teaching Philosophy

“The beautiful thing about learning, is that nobody can take it away from you.” – B.B. King.

I believe music belongs to everyone. Every student and every lesson matters, and my role is to help each student discover their potential. In my studio, students of all backgrounds and learning styles—from neurotypical to neurodivergent—are welcomed and supported.

My approach focuses on more than just playing notes: I teach students how to visualize, aim with purpose, and develop effective practice habits. By learning how to practice, students gain the tools to improve technique, refine their sound, and grow independently. Lessons are designed to be engaging, inclusive, and empowering, so that students leave not only as stronger musicians, but with skills they can carry for a lifetime.

Biography

Tomás Vela began playing guitar at age 12, first inspired by rock and heavy metal before falling in love with classical guitar. He went on to earn both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Guitar Performance, winning numerous awards along the way—including “Outstanding Guitarist” in solo and ensemble categories and first prize in the 2012 UTSA Concerto Competition.

Since 2014, Tomás has taught at the Musical Arts Center of San Antonio (MACSA). From 2015–2022, he also served as Guitar Director at Alamo Heights High School, where he led the classical guitar program for seven years and founded the San Antonio Youth Guitar Orchestra (SAYGO). His students have gone on to earn UIL and TAPPS awards, perform at the Tobin Center, and pursue music in college.

Beyond teaching, Tomás expanded his skill set by completing Google’s Data Analytics certification and studying data visualization under a professional mentor. These skills led him back to MACSA, where he currently serves as Chief Strategy Officer, combining his passion for education with innovation and leadership.

Outside of music and strategy, Tomás is a proud endurance athlete: a three-time marathon finisher, two-time Ironman Texas participant, and active cyclist in numerous charity events. He also enjoys cheering on the San Antonio Spurs, film, art, learning foreign languages, and pursuing personal growth.
